History of the Pyongyang Marathon
The Pyongyang Marathon also known as the Mangyongdae Prize Marathon is now in its 30th year. The race has been held each April since 1981, but has only opened to foreigners in recent years. This year will be only the 5th year that the race is open to foreign amateurs. The race starts and finishes at Kim Il Sung Stadium. In 2016, due to renovations being done to Kim Il Sung Stadium, the Pyongyang Marathon started and finished at the Rungrado May Day Stadium, the largest stadium in the world. The race runs through the city streets of Pyongyang past many significant landmarks like the Arch of Triumph, Kim Il Sung Square, Juche Tower, and others.
