About Pyongyang Marathon

The Pyongyang Marathon has taken place in the capital city of North Korea (officially known as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea). This annual marathon has been a regular fixture since 1981. International elite runners have competed in the event since 2000. In the last decade and a half, runners from Ethiopia, Ukraine, China and Kenya have triumphed on this road race, being crowned Pyongyang Marathon winners. See the results of the 2016 Pyongyang Marathon here.

From 2013 onwards, the event is open to foreign amateur runners. Now, anyone can register and participate in the Pyongyang Marathon. Some tour operators even include complimentary Pyongyang Marathon-branded merchandise – also available to purchase online.

It is remarkably easy for foreigners to participate in this exciting event. Registration for the Pyongyang Marathon can be done through tour operators for North Korea (Uri Tours, for example). Many of these companies have travel package offers to North Korea which include, flights to Pyongyang, accommodation in one of the capital city’s 5-star hotels, Pyongyang Marathon registration and a city tour.

The Pyongyang Marathon 2016 race route was a change from previous years. In 2016, Kim Il-Sung stadium was closed for renovations and repairs. This meant that the event, which took place on April 10 2016 was relocated to the Rungrado 1st of May Stadium – the largest stadium in the world. As a result, the race route was altered slightly to accommodate the change in host venue. 60,000 spectators were present to cheer on the runners. The 2017 race route will be a return to preceding years with all distances finishing in the Kim Il-Sung stadium.
